Father’s Day is a great time to talk about the new DC comic Superman --- Chapter One: “The Son of Superman” featuring the original super family especially when you get to talk to its inker, Mick Gray. Gray also worked on another epic father-son team, Batman and Robin. Mick Gray (Superman, Batman and Robin, Promethea) is a staple at San Francisco Bay Area conventions --- and so is his daughter, 15-year-old Genevieve, a talented musician and artist.

Dore’ Ripley, a lecturer at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), had a better afternoon than most on January 20th. Why? Gene Luen Yang --- the recently named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and author of BOXERS & SAINTS, THE SHADOW HERO, AMERICAN BORN CHINESE and more came to visit! Concord, CA - On the first Saturday in May, over 2,300 comic book shops in 60-plus countries gave away more than 56 million comic books to celebrate Free Comic Book Day. If you are still unaware of Free Comic Book Day, it is the only holiday that celebrates reading and reading literacy (very heady stuff for an English teacher). Here’s an admission: I don’t know much about manga beyond The Last Airbender wherea twelve-year-old boy is fighting to bring about world peace,and Sailor Moon, the story of a young girl who battles evil in a Catholic school uniform.  That’s got to be wrong. Teenagers must wear sailor suits to school in Japan? Anyway, at the anime-heavy Kraken Con held on Sunday, April 6 there were a whole lotta Sailor Moons giggling through the halls of the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California.
