Secondhand Heroes: Brothers Unite

Justin LaRocca Hansen’s BROTHERS UNITE (Secondhand Heroes) is the first installment of a nostalgic comic adventure trilogy of two brothers, Tuck and Hudson, who encounter the fantastical.

After a puzzling explosion at a neighbor’s house, Tucker and Hudson become the owners of two magical scarves and an umbrella. Who would think that by the end of summer break, they would return to school with secret superpowers! The budding superheroes --- now named Stretch and Brella --- quickly befriend a wilderness sidekick in the form of a smart-talking squirrel named Steen and begin fighting evil. “Right on, dude!”

"Full of action, Hansen’s graphic novel gives us a taste of crime-fighting super heroism, mythical lore and wistful puppy-love....the storytelling is enhanced through water-color rendered comic book panels."

All the while, older brother Hudson struggles with finding courage to talk to his crush, Isabella, and little brother Tucker is there to tease him for it. As their strength grows, so too, does the brothers’ bond.  Before long, Stretch and Brella are pitted against not only a school bully, but medieval knights and a powerful masked nemesis, as well --- all in their hometown of Scraggy Neck.

Full of action, Hansen’s graphic novel gives us a taste of crime-fighting super heroism, mythical lore and wistful puppy-love. A strong point in Hansen’s storytelling is how the sibling duo works toward a common goal: saving people. With super fun dialogue, the storytelling is enhanced through water-color rendered comic book panels. At the end of the first novel, Hansen paints an ominous apocalyptic future preview of the next challenging quest ahead of our heroes.

For those who enjoy adventure, grab this graphic novel! Hansen keeps our eyes busy on nearly every single page with fight scenes and perfectly-paced storytelling. As someone who does not typically pick up an adventure story, I was enthralled with the painting style and comical writing. “Nice moves, partner!”
